If that has the 2.3, does it also have AWD, or is that all going to the front wheels?

Whatever I have read so far suggests only FWD, not AWD.

I’m surprised they put the 2.3L in it; t hat puts it in a higher displacement tax bracket than the 2.0L in much of the world.

Some of those pictures have an automatic gear dial in the console. I wonder if they're going to do an auto Focus ST, give more competition to the GTI that way

You seem to be forgetting that the DCT in the current Focus is a complete dumpster fire.

Ford sold 550k cars in the US last year, and will probably sell around 460k . Y eah, t hose numbers are dropping (in 2015 they sold ~760k), but they are still huge . Only about 20% of Ford’s sales, but similar to what Volkswa gen sold altogether, around twice as m any as Mazda sells, and five times what Volvo or Mitsubishi sells.

It seems a bit crazy to me to pull the plug on all of them even though they still need to design and build the cars for other markets. Obviously they save some on not needing to do US emissions or crash testing, and maybe they avoid the cost of making an awkward sedan variant for the smaller ones, but it seems like a huge risk.

I assume Ford feels like the market wants SUVs (or CUV, I’m combining them here) , that car sales are cannibalizing the market for SUVs, and that if they take away the cars, most of those buyers will just opt for an SUV. In the first case, the fact that many people want SUVs does not mean that there’s not a significant portion of the population that wants cars (even if it fell to 20% of the market, that’s still a huge “niche”). And the idea that people who wanted a car will just buy an SUV seems pretty unlikely when they can just go to another company that does sell what they are looking for seems like wishful thinking on Ford’s part.

just looking at an aggregate number is not telling you the whole story. I doubt Fiesta ever made any money in North America. Focus has had $3-4,000 in incentives for a couple of years now, dragging out-the-door prices down to the Fiesta’s MSRP. Fusion had a few good years but volume has slid to the point it is unprofitable and not going to recover. Taurus was never a big seller, and there’s no justification for doing a new one.

it doesn’t matter how many cars they sold last year (or this year) if each sale was a net negative, and there’s no realistic volume which would make them profitable. staying in a segment just so you can be there while burning money to do so is senseless.

and of course, there’s the fact that the vast majority of people complaining about this decision weren’t buying these cars anyway.  they’re not obligated to build cars nobody wants just so you can talk about them on the Internet.

Obviously, a bunch of people wanted these cars. Would they still want them if Ford priced them at the same profit margin they sell their SUVs at? Presumably not, or at least fewer would, but its not like Ford was heavily undercutting anyone else here, most of these people are just going to go off and buy cars from someone else. Maybe that doesn’t hurt Ford’s bottom line much short term, but I do think ceding that market share hurts them.

um, yes, discounting the Focus by $3,000-4,000 was absolutely undercutting.

Compared to other cars? The prices are similar (or Ford would have been selling a lot more Focuses). And when they set MSRP, a discount off MSRP does not necessarily reflect much of anything.

I was legitimately looking at a 4th gen Focus ST as my next car. I'm actually kinda pissed that it's not going to be an option.

That’s a lot of grunt to deliver to just the front wheels.

My gf’s Focus ST certainly struggles to put the power down.  With the winter tires, I can get the traction control to kick in at 60 mph in 3rd gear on dry pavement.
